Visiting Lesotho King Letsie III on Tuesday said Zimbabweans, including future generations, should derive inspiration from historical monuments such as the National Heroes Acre which depict the country’s liberation from colonial bondage.
Black Zimbabweans waged a bitter armed struggle against the oppressive white settler regime, culminating in the attainment of independence from Britain in 1980.
Speaking to the media after touring the National Shrine, the Lesotho monarch said monuments such as the Heroes Acre were crucial in the narration of Zimbabwe’s history, state-run news agency New Ziana quoted the Lesotho King as saying.
The National Heroes Acre in Harare is the final resting place for heroes and heroines of Zimbabwe’s war of liberation as well as those deemed to have excelled in the service of the country.
“This is a great monument that the people of Zimbabwe through the wisdom of their leadership and through their wisdom have decided to put up and create to celebrate and remember the struggles that they have gone through to achieve the independence and liberation that they now enjoy today,” he said.
He hoped the historic shrine would continue to be an inspiration to the people of Zimbabwe, the future Zimbabwean generation and others in the African continent.
King Letsie III arrived in Zimbabwe on Monday for a four-day state visit aimed at cementing bilateral ties between the two countries.
The Lesotho monarch later visited the Lion and Cheetah Park, a game reserve a few kilometers outside the capital Harare. Enditem
