The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Elections Committee has announced it will hold its national elections on July 20, 2017 to elect officers to steer the affairs of the association.
A statement released here signed by Ben Batabe Assorow, Chairman of the GJA Elections Committee said, “Following the conclusion of the work of the Election Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) relating to the GJA 2017 Elections, the Elections Committee has decided as follows;
· Re-opening of nominations for prospective candidate to contest National and Regional Executive positions –Monday, 22nd May 2017.
· Closing of Nominations –Monday, 5th June, 2017.
· Vetting of Applicants –Monday, 12th June, 2017.
· Publication of Voter’s Register -20th June, 2017.
· Notice of Poll –Wednesday, 5th July 2017.
· Election Day –Thursday, 20th July, 2017.”
The statement directed fresh aspirants to look out for the advertised fees for the various positions and pay accordingly before the close of nominations.
However, aspirants who earlier on paid to file their nominations to contest the March 31st postponed elections, the statement asked them not pay any new nomination fee if they were still interested in contesting the up-coming elections.
“The Committee wishes to clarify that individuals who have already paid nominations fees are exempt. This means that only fresh applicants will be required to pay nominations fees,” the statement said.
The GJA Elections Committee further asked aspiring candidates and members to pay all dues in arrears and regularize their membership in order to be in good standing by Monday, 5th June, 2017.
The GJA has been in the news for some time now following the controversy that surrounded the disqualification of some aspirants across the country.
Following the controversy, the election which was supposed to have been held on March 31, 2017 was subsequently re-scheduled indefinitely.
The GJA EDAC last week ruled to over-turn the disqualification of some aspirants and cleared all of them to contest the election.
