The Council for African Instituted Churches (CAIC) has commended the government for the renewed efforts to combat illegal mining.
“It is fulfilling to note that the Government… is now more ready than ever to ensure that the menace of galamsey is properly dealt with,” it said in a release signed by Rev. Isaac Anaman, General Secretary of the Council.
The statement said it was unfortunate that water bodies were being polluted and lands de-graded, as a result of illegal mining.
“As a nation, we do not even have statistics to know the amount of land destroyed or the number of people who die in the dangerous mining pits,” said the release.
It said the CAIC was thankful that “at long last” Ghana was taking steps to end illegal mining and in effect, bring an end to the suffering of people who lived around mining areas.
The release said humans were stewards of God’s creation and had no right to destroy anything in this world such as the lands and the water bodies which only belonged to God and not humans.
“It is our responsibility to always protect and manage what God has graciously entrusted unto us with care and in accordance with his desires and purpose.”
It said humans had to remember that they would one day account for how they managed the natural resources that God entrusted into their care.
“It is our fervent prayer that as managers of God’s rich resources, we as Ghanaians would contribute our quota to stop the illegal mining activities and preserve the lands and water bodies for the next generation,” the release said.
