A group of teachers that calls themselves Organized Teachers for Action (OTA) has called on H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana to dismiss Mr. Jacob Aaworb-Naag Maabor Kor, popularly known as Jacob Kor who is the Director General of Ghana Education Service.
The group which has a broad membership base across the country said, Mr. Jacob Kor’s actions during the erstwhile NDC administration are a threat to the teaching fraternity. The group added that, the continuous existence of Mr. Jacob Kor as Director General of GES will hinder the NPP’s agenda to introduce the Free Senior High School Education, among other good educational initiatives which are intended to promote quality education in basic and second cycle schools.
Mr. Jacob Kor was appointed by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, now former President of the Republic of Ghana to act in the capacity of a Director General of Ghana Education Service in January, 2015. He was later confirmed by the same former President John Dramani Mahama in consultation with Ghana Education Service Council and the Public Services Commission on 18th August, 2015.
Mr. Charles Tsegah Aheto who is now Executive Director of the National Council for curriculum and Assessment was assigned as acting Director General for a short period. He was every teacher’s favourite. He was so liberal to the teacher front. His usual defense on the teacher front won the admiration of all, hence his removal from the acting position by John Dramani Mahama was a shock.
The spokes person of the group Mr. John Tia asserted that, the Director General of GES on several occasions has acted in a capacity which suggests that he was in bed with the NDC government. He said, on February 20, last year, Mr. Jacob Kor stated categorically that, the delayed teachers’ arrears is as a result of fake documents presented by teachers. This according to the group is affront to teachers in the teaching fraternity. They added that, up to date, he has not been able to prosecute any teacher for fake document as claimed by him. “ Mr. Kor put up this defense to look good in the eyes of his pay master which is the NDC government as against the right of teachers. He is an NDC member” he remarked.
According to Mr. John Tia, the constant defense put up by the Director General of Education was too obvious for one to say that he is an NDC appointed in that capacity to defend the government in the area of education. He said the threat issued by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary School [CHASS] to shutdown schools for non-payment of government subsidy and grants was appropriate. The Director General in an attempt to defend the NDC government again in a press conference blamed the delay of government subsidy and grants on late submission of students’ data by some lackadaisical heads of SHS. This according to the group is highly untrue and a cloak to throw dust into the eyes of the public by the Director General of GES.
The poor academic performance in most schools at the basic and second cycle schools should be laid at the door of Mr. Jacob Kor. He is indeed a failure. He should therefore be dismissed for presiding over a failed educational system Mr. John Tia lamented. We have no doubt he is an NDC who will work to the detriment of the NPP. His recent involvement in some transfers to favour some NDC Directors of Education is a clear manifestation that he is an NDC. He will surely be a threat to the NPP in their attempt to deliver on promises made in respect of education he stated.
He ended with a call on the President as a matter of urgency to dismiss him with immediate effect.
