China’s Sinohydro, which earlier this year expressed interest in helping Harare City Council upgrade its water and sewerage system, also wants to invest in rehabilitation and upgrading of the city’s roads, according to council meeting records.
The company has submitted an expression of interest proposing to undertake a detailed study of the project that also seeks to turn some of the roads into dual carriageways.
The city’s director of works Phillip Pfukwa recently wrote to the council seeking approval and authority to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a feasibility study on the project to begin, state media reported Wednesday.
Zimbabweans travelling to Botswana by road will recall the major rehabilitation of the 80-km highway from Ramokgwebana on the other side of the Plumtree border post to Francistown by the state-owned Sinohydro.
Sinohydro is currently involved in the proposed construction of Kunzvi Dam to the north of Harare, which will boost water supplies to the city, as well as power station rehabilitation and expansion at Kariba Hydro Power Station.
It also awaits financial closure so that it begins work on the expansion of Hwange Thermal Power Station in north-western Zimbabwe where generation capacity will be boosted by 600 megawatts in a job that will last 42 months. Enditem
