The Right Alliance-Ghana feels frightened by suggestions of forming another or more paramilitary groups by political parties and their functionaries.
This has been occasioned by comments made by the former Member of Parliament for Nkoranza South and former Deputy Local Government Minister in the erstwhile Ex-President John Mahama’s administration, Hon Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, in an interview he recently granted to TV3.
In that interview, an obviously irate Hon Agyekum, whose home had been invaded by some individuals claiming to be members of the task force set up by the Chief of Staff to retrieve alleged missing state vehicles, called on his party members to form counter vigilante groups to match the activities of the Delta Force and Invincible Force of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Having condemned activities of such paramilitary groups in our earlier statement and appealed to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, to see to their complete and permanent disbandment and disarming, we find the former MP’s call most distasteful and a veiled endorsement of lawlessness which is a recipe for chaos and national instability.
The Right Alliance-Ghana considers any paramilitary group not registered and licensed as a private security company under our laws an illegal entity and their activities as criminal. It is therefore unfortunate for a former lawmaker and Minister of State to be making comments that suggest a tacit endorsement of such illegality and criminality. We therefore condemn his call unequivocally and urge members of his party to ignore it and treat it with utmost contempt, as it is most irresponsible for someone of his status.
The Right Alliance-Ghana wishes to reiterate its earlier appeal to the President to ensure the complete and expeditious disbandment and disarming of all such paramilitary groups as the recent attack on the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator by members of the Delta Force is a portent of the insecurity we are all in if we allow such so called vigilante groups to continue to exist and operate.
We believe a simple statement from the President denouncing any such group will catalyse a resolute action by the police to clamp down on them as the Police seem rather handicapped and lethargic in dealing with them under the current circumstances.
To the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or any other political party and their functionaries who may be contemplating forming other paramilitary groups or reviving hibernating ones to counter the criminal activities of the Invincible and Delta Forces, the Right Alliance-Ghana can only tell them not to even dream of it!
