The Executive Director of the Accra International Book Festival (AIBF) has implored Ghanaians to rally behind the government in the great effort of building a prosperous nation.
In a statement marking Ghana’s 62nd Independence celebration Wednesday, Iris Naa Akwetey said the successes of the country were achieved at a time of great national unity.
“The independence of Ghana won to the admiration of the world on March 6, 1957, the Akosombo Dam constructed, and the return to democracy in 1992 were a function of patriotism at the highest level and we need that very attribute today more than ever,” she said.
She said the challenges confronting the country today, including the rising unemployment rate and activities of vigilante groups could only be resolved when Ghanaians joined forces with the security agencies to reverse the negative trend.
“We can get nothing, absolutely nothing done if we fight individually. Until we learn that we need every Ghanaian on board to build this nation to its expected glory, we will get nothing done and we will continue to complain about the poor performances of our government,” the statement read.
The 62nd Independence celebration will take in Tamale, the first time the day has been marked outside the nation’s capital, Accra.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be joined by ministers of state, Members of Parliament (MPs), chiefs and members of the diplomatic corps to mark the day.
He is expected to touch on some of his government’s achievements and outline some projects ahead of the 2020 general election, including how to solve the unemployment situation.
But Iris Naa Akwetey believes the high expectation Ghanaians place on their governments is responsible for the frequent report of disappointment.
“We need to temper with our expectations since no one government or political party has all the magic to the prosperity Ghana seeks,” she said.
