Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has clarified that wanted CEO of Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah, was not arrested by the police as has been suggested.
Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah told Joy News’ Emefa Apawu in an exclusive interview that although there was a prior arrest before a warrant was issued on Wednesday, that arrest was not made by the police.
“Rather, we [police] are looking for him. It is only NAM 1 that we are looking for. We had already obtained the warrant of arrest for two other directors [of Menzgold],” the CID Director told Joy News.
After months of uncertainty, a circuit court issued the warrant for the arrest of the of NAM1.
Nana Appiah Mensah has been declared a wanted man by the police
He has been declared wanted for defrauding by false pretence among other charges.
The warrant for the arrest of the embattled businessman was issued in Accra after his investment company, Menzgold, failed to refund clients’ money and dividends.
There are also warrants for the arrest of one Rose Tetteh, believed to be the wife of Nana Appiah Mensah and one Benedicta Appiah, said to be his sister.
A close confidante of President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, first hinted about a troubled day for NAM 1 and his close associates when he posted on his Facebook page Wednesday morning that NAM 1 been arrested but had breached bail and absconded.
“We can’t allow those who allegedly dupe people with such impunity to get away with it that easily. Let’s smoke them out, wherever they are, and throw the book at them! While I will not want a pesewa of my tax money to be involved with this ponzi matter, I believe majority of Ghanaians will agree with me that the law must come down heavily on those who use such schemes to destroy the lives of many people,” Gabby had posted.
Gabby’s post brought hope to many aggrieved investors of the company who had been pushing the state to intervene in their quandary.
The investors have staged demonstrations in Accra and Kumasi to compel the government to act.
Meanwhile, Joy News is learning that the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) had been the government agency that had arrested the embattled CEO.
Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah said police are arming themselves with credible information that will help prosecute their case against NAM 1 successfully.
“We started this investigation somewhere in December and we have gotten to the level where we are ready to issue an arrest. That is why when we got to know that NAM 1 was not in the country, we initiated the processes of informing INTERPOL so that the 194-member states will help us arrest him,” she told Joy News’ Emefa Apawu.
