Manufacturers of the world-acclaimed bamboo bicycles in Ghana have donated five of the products for winners of this year’s Farmers’ Day celebrations. Ghana Bamboo Bikes made the donation at a short ceremony at the Food and Agric Ministry in Accra.
“We believe bamboo bikes can support these hard-working farmers in their load-bearing activities and enhance their productivity,” said Bernice Dapaah, CEO and Founder of the company who pledged to make this generous gift a yearly activity as part of its social responsibility.
This year’s awards is being held in the Northern regional capital, Tamale under the theme: “Agriculture, Moving Ghana Beyond Aid.”
Receiving the products, a Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, George Boahen Oduro expressed appreciation for the work that the Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative is doing with the country’s abundant bamboo resources.
“Bicycles form a critical element of Ghana’s transportation system and for several decades have established important development linkages between different regions of the country. The role of Bamboo bicycles in achieving a green economy will continue to gain more and more important as we witness a gradual cultural shift toward sustainable transports in Ghana,” he said.
The bamboo bike is produced by the Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative, a social enterprise based in Kumasi in the Ashanti regional capital. The initiative has established bamboo farms across several farming communities in the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions helping local farmers to increase their incomes by working on these farms while greening the farmlands to help mitigate the impact of climate change.
The factory, located on the outskirts of Kumasi, employs hundreds of men and women who have an opportunity to get their education back on track as a result of the income they earn.
The bikes are meant to be handed over to this year’s winners in the categories of the Best Female Farmer, Best Youth Farmer, Best Female Cocoa Farmer, Best Shea Nut Picker and Best Young Cocoa Farmer.
