The Babolat Doubles Open competition took place at the Ghana Cement Club House, TDC Club House and TOR Tennis Club House from Friday, 21st September to Sunday, 23rd September 2018.
The tournament was opened to Under-16, Social 1, above 50's and mixed doubles tennis players.
The Social 1 was mainly for tennis coaches, semi-professional players and for people who are quite competitive but are not professionals (those who are not ITF and GTF ranked).
The above 50 category involved team players which were older than 50 years. The mixed doubles allows both males and females to form teams together and participate. The under-16 category was to allow young players to like tennis as a sport and to also develop their game.
The event served as a platform for players to display their skills and also to socialise and network with other tennis players.
Clement Alisi and Fred Agyir won the Social 1 event after defeating siblings Prince Ablorh and Raman Ablorh, 6-4, 6-4 in the final. A very competitive final which attracted a large crowd.
In the under-16 category, Richard Okine and Ishmael Dowuna overcame Desmond Ayaaba and Bright Nortey 6-3, 6-2 to win the trophy along with other tennis accessories and services such rackets, shoes and three-month gym access.
In the mixed doubles, last year winners Andrew Adu and Yvonne Bruce-Tagoe successfully defended the title after saw off the challenge of Robert Botchway and Kate Coleman 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
The above 50 category brought about a lot of smiles as Paa Kofi and Ike Nartey beat Alfred Adjei and Napo Wobil by a single set 8-2 to be crowned the new champions.
The tournament was sponsored by Ecostar, Saint-Gobain, Ecostar, McDan Shipping Company, Lucof Investment, Bossgie Limited, Jonmoore, Benligh, Physioshop, Bethel Hospital and supported by Tennis Sports Ghana.
However, Mr Ebo Hayfron, the commissioner of the competition called for more support in
“A big issue is the lack of funds and we were fortunate enough to get some good sponsors but if we had more, then the prize money would increase. The refreshment aspect will also be good and then we would have much more balls to play with. Regardless, we are trying to navigate things smoothly and without hitch.”
