President Akufo-Addo says his government will spend GH¢200 million as part of efforts to improve sanitation in the country.
The President stated that the level of filth in the cities is unacceptable and public officials need to find a way around the situation.
Delivering the constitutionally mandated State Of the Nation Address in Parliament Thursday, Nana Akufo said: “apart from the efforts being made to resolve the legacy of debt in the sector, government will spend 200 million to address the issue of sanitation”.
Restating his desire to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa before his term expires, President Akufo-Addo said his government is working with the private sector to find solutions to the issue.
“…the government is working with private sector authorities to find ways to make the city clean with strategies that are intended to effect changes in our attitude towards waste generation as well as improve dramatically our methods of waste management,” he said.
He added that "strict enforcement of sanitation rules and regulations” will be used to support those efforts.
The president said that by 2019 when he returns to parliament, there will be an appreciable improvement in the sanitation sector.
Accra Mayor, Mohammed Adjei Sowah in a bid to pursue the president’s dream has been decongesting the city's streets of hawkers, who are believed to contribute to the filth.
Mr. Sowah has also led taskforces to clear the city streets of unauthorized signposts and signboards.
He has also condemned the manner in which some institutions advertise their programs by the indiscriminate posting of fliers, by especially churches, saying “even God will not be happy with you.”
