The journey to reposition Ga South Municipal Assembly (GSMA) can be described as everything but smooth. The word 'tortuous' would have been apt, but it will still not capture the real picture.
As one of the 10 districts in the Greater Accra Region, the Assembly was naturally cast to be the hub of industrialisation because of its land mass and companies that have expressed the interest to set up there.
But GSMA has real infrastructural challenges, which formed a major part of the nightmares of past Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs).

School structures are deteriorating; hospitals lack the requisite equipment to deliver quality healthcare to residents and streets have no light to illuminate the area.
These were the challenges Joseph Nyarni Stephen signed up for when he was appointed the MCE of the area by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017.

Exactly one-year as the political head, there are visible changes that are taking place in the municipality.
Through the instrumental leadership of Mr Nyarni, the GSMA has distributed about 780 street lights to the various communities under it.
A police station has been constructed at Denkyira in the Oboom Domiabra Constituency to beef up security in the area, which was the major concern of residents.

On education, a six-classroom unit has been built at Kokrobite and this has helped to eliminate the shift system, characteristic of basic education in Ghana.
The GSMA has also renovated a six-unit classroom block at Oboom Domiabra in the municipality that had been left to rotten. About 1300 desks have been distributed to the various schools there.

There has been an improvement in which waste, both liquid and solid, are disposed of in the municipality. The dumping site sited at Weija Township has been shut down and a new one has been opened at Tidy Up at the McCarthy Hill.

A total of 110 toilet facilities have been constructed within the Municipality and there is an ongoing construction of drainage systems at the Galilee electoral area.

The GSMA under Mr Nyarni has prioritised agriculture with the distribution of 300 NPK, 150 bags of urea and 130 5kg of maize seeds to farmers last year.

There has also been an improvement in healthcare delivery with the completion of CHPS compounds and distribution of beds to hospitals in the municipality, four months into the MCE's term.

Previously, residents used to move from Tomefa to Kasoa or Amanfrom to access health care but the completion of the facility has halted that trip.
Mr Nyarni's work in the municipality the past year has been termed one-achievement, one-day by residents who say they have seen real transformation since his appointment.
