The government has begun a restructuring exercise at the Ghana Education Service (GES) with the aim of repositioning Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET).
The new structure will have two director-generals under the GES who will each administer separate areas in the education sector.
Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo revealed Saturday there is going to be a Director-General in charge of TVET services and a Director-General in charge of education services.
The senior official explained the new structure will help the government to “shift the emphasis from grammar education to technical and vocational education.”
He said the absence of a clear structure at the GES and Education Ministry to support technical and vocational education has cost the country a lot.
“Everybody is emphasising grammar education so we want to have two divisions within the Ghana Education Service,” he told Joy News’ Eastern Region Correspondent, Kofi Siaw.
Ghana's technical education has been facing several challenges including poor infrastructure, limited academic progression, outmoded curriculum and a wide gap between industry and graduates.
The problems have been blamed on neglect by past governments.
Having recognised the relevance of technical and vocational education towards the fulfilment of its promises, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun to shift its focus to that area.
The Senior Minister said the government wants to build a skilled workforce for the rapid agricultural, industrial and economic transformation of the country.
“So all matters related to technical and vocational education will be handled under the purview of the Director-General Ghana Technical Education Services,” Mr Maafo said.
