Police in the Awutu Breku town of the Central region have re-arrested three suspects who attempted to break jail on Wednesday evening.
The three suspects had been kept in the police cell for various offenses in the Awutu Breku township.
District police commander ASP Johson Hesse, who confirmed the incident, told Joy News the suspects were connected to stealing, assault and fraud offenses in the town.
“The ceiling of the cell is made from plywood so one stood on the shoulder of the other and then they used force to break the ceiling and they managed to pass through the ceiling before the man on duty spotted them,” ASP Hesse said.
He added that the police officer raised an alarm, other officers rushed in and the suspects were re-arrested.
According to ASP Hesse, the suspects have been taken to court and charged with escaping from lawful custody.
They will be transfered to another cell in another district and kept there until a decision is made on them by the court.
He also disclosed that all other inmates have been removed and the cell closed until the ceiling is repaired.
