The Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in collaboration with MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned a 90-seater ICT centre for the students and staff at a cost of GHS 560,000 which excludes the building.
The facility provides access to electronic sources of information including journals and electronic books from reputable databases and publishers and seeks to enhance teaching and learning.
The e-library has a 90-seater capacity where students and others can have access to 10 academic database and 19,000 e- journals, with additional 20-seater staff wing.
The project was initiated with the school’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF) which covered finishing and furnishing, servers and accessories, e-journal subscriptions and MTN Ghana Foundation supported with computers and accessories with other logistics.
Speaking at the ceremony the Vice-Chancellor of Koforidua Technical University, Professor Mrs. Smile Dzisi said the e-resource laboratory which will serve as a sound proof room for video conferencing, seminars and recording live lectures is equipped to provide every electronic resource the staff will need to enhance their teaching and research.
She said, the University needed a couple of workshops and laboratories, especially a modern facility for a Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Development for students to be equipped with practical entrepreneurial skills.
She said KTU as an institution has set its focus on soft and employable skills, innovation and entrepreneurial attitude as the trade mark of its graduates.
The Senior Manager Sustainability and Social Impact at MTN, Mrs. Georgina Asare Fiagbenu said her outfit was proud of the investment made because over 6,895 students will be benefiting from this initiative.
Mrs. Fiagbenu noted that the impact of ICT on the learning and development cannot be over emphasized in the modern day world and the lack of it is considered a serious development gap.
She said, since the establishment of MTN Foundation in 2007, the foundation has invested over $13 million USD in more than 142 life enhancing projects in the areas of education, health and economic empowerment across the country.
