The acting Executive Secretary of National Teaching Council (NTC) Dr. Evelyn Oduro has asked teachers to stop attacking the minister of education.
Speaking on Pulse, Thursday, she said “the minister has not done anything wrong” as he is not involved in the circulation of the information on teachers’ licensing examination.
Dr. Oduro said though the National Teaching Council (NTC) has in its plans to carry out a licensing regime for teachers no decision has been taken yet on the modalities to be used.
The media reported the former Executive Secretary of the NTC, Dr. Augustine Tawiah as saying all formalities for the full implementation of the licensing regime had been finalized and a secretariat to issue the license had been established.
He said, no teacher could teach in any school in the country without the Teacher’s License from next year.
He emphasized that the license was to get rid of lazy and non-performing teachers in the educational sector, adding that it would require teachers to prove their competence and achieve results, in their areas of specializations.
But Dr. Evelyn Oduro said the council has not met yet to take any decision on the licensing of teachers and has not asked anyone to do anything on the council’s behalf.
She said “the hullabaloo is not from the NTC and we have not put any information in the papers that we are going to examine teachers”.
Also reacting to the press conference by the executive of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) she advised the association to find the roots of the information and “address it accordingly”.
Dr. Oduro would rather have NAGRAT dialoguing with them and not to criticising them in the media.
She revealed the last meeting on August 1 with NAGRAT and other teacher association went well and such an issue was not discussed.
However Vice President of NAGRAT Angel Carbonu also on Pulse said the reports on the issue showed that definite decisions had been made regarding the licensing regime.
He stated “when emphatic statements are made ahead of the issue then there is a problem”.
Dr. Evelyn assured the NAGRAT Vice President that no fees have been concluded contrary to what are in the papers and decisions have not been made yet on the license scheme.
She advised Mr. Carbonu to “exercise patience and calm his people down as the NTC will not do anything that will harm teachers”.
