Recently, Ghanaian musician Prophet Seth Frimpong narrated how his wife, mentees and even Musicians Association of Ghana (MUSIGA), the organisation responsible for the welfare of musicians in Ghana abandoned him.
It is emerging that MUSIGA is not in a position to provide welfare support to its members across the country.
Although a welfare department exists headed by Benedict Ali Kolan, he said their financial status is empty due to non-payment of welfare dues by musicians.
"Each regional branch is supposed to contribute something to the national welfare....No region sent us a pesewa. Ever since I took over last year…we’ve got no money at all," he explained.
Mr Ali Benedict revealed that the Union relies solely on the Ghana Musicians Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) to provide welfare assistance to its members.
He added that all donations that have been made by MUSIGA for the past one year were funded by GHMARO.
"For example, when Mr. Donkor died, it was GHAMRO that gave them an amount of ¢3,000. We came together to present that money to them [family]," he said.
Mr. Ali Kolan advised registered members of MUSIGA to pay their welfare dues to enable the Union to lend them the necessary support in emergency situations.
