The Education Minister says young actor Abraham Attah is not receiving any money for his role as Ambassador for government's flagship programme, free senior high school.
Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh revealed the ‘Beast Of No Nation’ star is only discharging a voluntary service to the government and people of the country.
“Abraham Attah wasn’t paid a farthing to come and campaign for Free SHS. He thought that if God has put him where he is, he should come and support a noble cause. He walked into my office and declared to be a free SHS ambassador for free,” he said.
The Education Minister unveiled the young actor as the ambassador for the free SHS on June 22, 2017. The programme is one of government's many "ambitious projects" to drive development in the country.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo explained in addition to the free tuition, there will be no admission fees, library fees, science centre fees, computer lab fees and examinations.
Also, there will be free textbooks, free boarding, and free meals to both boarding and day students.
To whip up enthusiasm ahead of the programme which starts in September, 2017, the Education Minister announced the young actor as the ambassador to encourage his colleagues to access the programme.
This did not sit well with critics who accused government of trying to dissipate the funds earmarked for the programme.
But the Education Minister said Abraham Attah is receiving no remuneration for his work.
To demonstrate the selflessness of the young actor, Dr Opoku Prempeh said Abraham Attah donated, "nearly a thousand pairs of sandals to fellow kids who are vulnerable just like when he was vulnerable here in Ghana."
"And we are saying I should throw him out?” he asked, adding critics failed to see the bigger picture.
