OUR PRAISE; HIS GRACE
A true story to encourage and motivate you to keep pressing on for victory
You don't know our story.
Don't envy us. Just pray for us.
You may not be aware of our dark nights.
That Friday evening on 8th January 2016, when I was playing my favorite game of table tennis at Lapaz preparing for my tournament, Gloria Somuah called me to tell me she was bleeding. I thought it was a prank to get me to come home. When she said I should meet her at Achimota Hospital, my heart missed a beat. I began to feel cold. I still didn't believe her. I picked trotro to Achimota Old station because I still felt it was not serious. At Achimota old station, I thought I needed to take a taxi because after placing another call to her, she told me they were almost there. My heart started to beat faster than normal.
When we got to the shell filling station near the Achimota new station traffic light, I heard a driver tooting his car's horn loudly and intermittently asking for way..... I turned to watch and I realized that the car belonged to my brother in-law Samuel Akrofi Darko. I became so scared, and my eyes were filled with tears. I asked my cabbie to jump the red light so my wife could be rushed to the hospital. My wife's twin sister Gifty Akrofi Darko and their son Nana Kwabena were also part of the entourage.
I called my childhood sweetheart Barbara Nunoo who works at Achimota hospital to be on standby because I had an emergency.
When we got there, they told us my wife's Blood Pressure (BP) was way above the limit so they had to take emergency measures to stabilize her condition. I was crying inside me like a baby.
They gave my wife some injections and told us to go to 37 Military Hospital for special care. A referral letter was given to us. We quickly rushed into our car and sped to 37 with our amber lights on.
On our way, I called my mate Captain Perez Poku and told him of my issue. He told me he was not around but would be there in the morning to help.
At 37, a doctor inserted an instrument into my wife's ........ and she started screaming. I could feel the pain even though it was not me. She was given some injections to stabilize her situation. She was given a bed to sleep on and we were told to go home.
EEEEEISH.... 5 months pregnant and bleeding.... Asem aba oooooooo.
We had no choice. We left to the house with a lot on our minds.
Very early in the morning we got back to 37. We were told to go to a particular doctor at Trade Fair for a special scan to ascertain the extent of damage on the foetus.
When the scan was done, I asked the doctor about the issue, and he said there was a breach..........breach?????? What kraa is breach?
He said the tube that supplied oxygen and food was damaged so the baby (boy) had to be aborted.
SEVERE PRE-ECLAMPSIA..... Aba brofo nso nyin?
Over to you google! Me I googled aaaaaaaaa and read all I could read. This was scary.
I was told the gospel truth... Nat, your wife is at risk of dying. Your baby is also at a high risk of dying. We need to save your wife, but before we can do that, we need to stabilize your wife's condition.
When we came back to 37, the doctors told us that they did not have Oxygen at the hospital so they wanted to transfer us to Ridge hospital. How on earth can a big hospital like 37 say they don't have oxygen? I quizzed. The doctor said he didn't know the reason why.
I told the doctor I preferred Korle-Bu because that is a bigger hospital and also my special daddy Dr Isaac Koranteng works there and we are all from Harvest Chapel International at South Tesano.
We once again set off to Korle-Bu only to be told that there was no bed for my wife because the place was full. Eish Ghana my happy home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I placed a few calls to make enquiries but still they said no space.
We dashed back to 37 Military Hospital to take another referral letter to Ridge Hospital. By this time my wife was tired and super scared.
The BP was still high and my wife was in serious pain.
At Ridge hospital, we were admitted to the emergency ward and more injections given.
I remember one Nurse asking me with confidence why I was laughing when my wife was being given an injection.... I uttered no words in response. How could I be laughing when I had been crying for days?
My Motown brother Akora Dr Salifu was very helpful to us at Ridge.
For three (3) or so days, doctors were doing their best to stabilize my wife's condition.
Nurse Anita Asare, thank you so much for your help at Ridge. You did all the magic.
Finally, the BP reduced to a manageable level after so many drugs were administered. The foetus was no more viable at this stage.
Finally, some drugs were inserted into my wife again to induce labour. (Forced labour)
Foetus too was tired so it didn't want to come.
I slept in the open at Ridge Hospital for three (3) days with mosquitoes feeding on me. I was not worried at all. I had to do it because it was necessary.
Finally, baby came out. We were very sad and broken.........But we were very grateful to God for saving my wife.
We had to manage the BP for 6 more months because it was still high. She stopped taking the BP drugs when she got pregnant again. We then moved on to take soluble aspirin till a few days to delivery when she was told by our doctor to stop taking it. I bought a BP machine from Zoobashop and we religiously checked my wife’s BP for one year, twice a day recording the values.
We were shown great love by Akora Rev Fitzgerald Odonkor and the entire Harvest Chapel International Family. Special love to Dr Isaac Koranteng, Pastor Gilbert Gakpey, Pastor Nii Odartey, Pastor Emmanuel Teinor, Akora Betty Donkor, Pastor Danso, Pastor Dominic and my sisters Ama Dansoa and Akosua Boadiwaah.
Adabrakra Official Town Presby showed massive love. Mama Herty Frempong, Mama Esther, Motown 2000 folks and you..... I mean you…….Special love to mum Jemima, dad Osa my aunties Domi, Gifty and Emma, and to all those who in diverse ways helped me out.
My family supported us and they barely slept during the period. Nana Kwabena, my nephew of four years deserves an award. He kept vigil till he broke down. My wife’s twin sister Gifty and husband Sammy were there for us, so were by brothers Frank, Mendelssohn, Charles, Kobi and the rest of the family.
During this period, I was so broke I didn’t know what to do. Someway somehow, friends and family supported me financially. Thank you Ekow Aikin, Kingsley Ohene Yeboah, Benjamin Mahama, Terry Buady and all those who supported in diverse ways.
We have been through a very torrid period.
Today, we are saying Glory Halleluyah to the King of Kings for seeing us through this dark period.
We are grateful to him for his blessings.
We owe it all to Jesus!
Dearly Beloved,
If you are going through a similar situation like this, or you are expecting a child, looking for marriage or a job, please don't give up. Our GOD WILL SEE YOU THROUGH.
I PROPHESY IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS THAT AS YOU READ OUR STORY AND BELIEVE THAT GOD IS STILL IN THE MIRACLE BUSINESS, MAY GOD MEET YOU NOW AT THE POINT OF YOUR NEED. MAY THE BARRENNESS BE BROKEN. MAY THE ROUGH PATHS BE MADE STRAIGHT.
MAY YOU ALSO GIVE A TESTIMONY TO THE GLORY OF GOD.
With love from Nathaniel & Gloria Somuah
God has blessed us with a beautiful baby girl: Awurabena Asoba Nhyiraba Somuah
