The Birth and Death Registry has been accused of contributing to the increasing rate of human trafficking in the country.
The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery said “even the births and deaths has become part of the problem because people are forging birth certificates to get minors passed as adults to go”.
These make-believe adults are transported by traffickers to other countries mostly for the purpose of hard labour and/or sexual exploitation.
Some 31 children were rescued recently on the Volta Lake by a taskforce comprising officials from the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigation's Department (CID), the Marine Police Unit, International Justice Mission and the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection.
Eleven persons were arrested in connection with the trafficking.
Under the Human trafficking Act, 2005 (Act 695) trafficking is an offence and thus these people will be dealt with accordingly.
Mr Dery advised that the masses should be educated against trafficking in the society because, trafficking starts in the society mostly as a result of poverty and the promise of greener pasture outside the nation.
He said, in his interaction with Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba on the sidelines of a familiarisation tour to various agencies under the Interior Ministry, that they are making progress to curb the situation.
The Ministies of Gender, Employment and other various Ministries as well, are working hand in hand with the Interior Ministry to do away with this problem gracing our society.
Also buildings are being refurbished in Madina, Accra with the help of the US Embassy to host traffickers when intercepted.
