Hello there,
There is a certain lady I admire a lot; a young woman who writes very well with so much wisdom. I hold her in such high esteem and have been asking for an interview with her for The Fabulous Woman Network (The FWN) for almost a year now.
I have even told her that since she is such a great writer, she can write her own story. Her response has always been that she is not ready yet. Mind you, almost every day she releases some very original and powerful piece on her social media page; exactly the kind that we ask from the women we feature on The FWN platform.
One nightI asked her “when you say you are not ready how do you mean? Is It that you don’t have a pen and a paper or you feel you are not ‘there’ yet?”She confirmed my suspicion; ; butshe felt she was not there yet. In fact, I was surprised and yet not surprised. The former because I thought of her as ‘way over there’, you should read her posts and see some of the things she has been doing for her community! I know because I have even supported some of her projects. On the other hand, I was not surprised because many of the women whom we have had the privilege of interviewing usually gave me similar responses during my first attempt. (OK, let me confess that I also find myself thinking ‘I am not there yet’ when certain opportunities come my way.)So really, who was I to judge her? The interesting thing about this particular lady is that, she perceives The FWN platform as a ‘high’ place for ‘accomplished’ women; she is eager to be featured yet she feels that she is not there. This just breaks my heart.
That night, after my conversation with this lady, I asked myself “where is ‘there’?’’ I mean when somebody says “I am not ‘there’ yet”, what or how do they mean? I am really looking for ‘there’ because I need to see what is there! Haba!
I once spoke to a colleague who was resigning from his post; I asked him if he could recommend his assistant for the vacant position but my colleague shook his head saying ‘no, he is not there yet’. Interestingly, his assistant occupied the position anyway and performed to the best of his ability. He was not perfect, but he learned along the way and has been running the show since then for years. Mind you, my said colleague’s reign was not without blemish.
About 10 months ago, one of the companies I consult for needed a Human Resources Manager. The person I recommended was a National Service Person whom I had been training for some few months. He was what we would typically describe as not ‘there’ yet in terms of experience and qualification. However, because he had a very positive attitude and a great desire to learn, he has been in the position for over 9 months and is doing very well. I am so proud of him!
Think about it. Aren’t there times when you have taken up responsibilities although you felt you were not ‘there’ yet but did it anyway? And haven’t there been times when you were super qualified and experienced for a position but performed below satisfaction when you were given the opportunity? Why then, do we think we need to be ‘there’ before we can do certain things? The way I see it, anywhere can be ‘there’. I don’t think that I need to be like the person I admire most or my role model before I can say I am ‘there’. I will be surprised if my role model herself feels that she is ‘there’ wherever she is now. If she ever says she is ‘there’ then I wouldn’t be seeing her pushing to achieve more. The truth is there is always a higher goal.
Dearest reader, please let nothing stop you; you are already at the ‘there’ that you are supposed to be at this time. Tomorrow you will be at another ‘there’ trust me. I think that the ‘there’ that we have been thinking about will probably happen when we die because as human beings we are supposed to keep growing. Every day we learn new things and take up new challenges, I doubt that there will be a day that you can sit and say ‘finally, I am there so let me stop growing’.
Today, I would like to encourage you not to think you need to be at a certain ‘there’ before you can do something you’ve been yearning to do for so long. Is there an opportunity for you to take up a new challenge? Take it!You are already ‘there’ wherever ‘there’ is, so make the most of it. What you need is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. Tomorrow you will move to another ‘there’ but in the meantime, what are you doing? If you want to move from A to C and you are at B now, what are you doing at B since it’s also an important ‘there’. Make things happen at your ‘there’.
Ama xx
