The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has become the first institution in Africa to be certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB), following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CWB and Corporate Professional Industrial Training (CPI) in Accra. This landmark tripartite partnership establishes RMU as the continent’s only CWB-accredited test centre, offering internationally recognised welding certification.
The collaboration brings together academic excellence, professional training, and industry certification to advance skills development, strengthen standards, and create new opportunities for growth and innovation.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Acting Vice-Chancellor of RMU, Dr Jethro W. Brooks Jr., highlighted the university’s strong relationship with CPI, especially in maritime education and vocational training through RMU’s Vocational Skills Training Center (VSTC).
“With this new MoU framework, we are confident that certification standards will improve further with additional programmes. We look forward to extending this collaboration beyond the current tripartite arrangement to a broader multinational level,” Dr Brooks said. He added that while formal education is important, skills development remains a key driver of socio-economic growth.
CPI President, Terry Drabiuk, expressed pride in partnering with RMU to bridge the gap between academia and industry. He noted that CPI would continue to enhance instructor competencies, support the development of certified welders in Ghana, and strengthen students’ employability after training.
Representing the Government of Ghana, Dr Nicodemaus Dery, National Coordinator of the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP), emphasised the importance of technical education to national development. He commended RMU for its leadership and described the initiative as a transformational pathway for young people, strengthening the National Apprenticeship Programme and helping Ghana produce skilled professionals who meet global standards.
This achievement positions RMU as a continental hub for welding excellence, attracting students from across Africa and beyond to benefit from CWB-certified facilities and high-quality training.
