The government has distributed 20,000 sanitary pads to public schools in the Ledzokuku Municipality, Greater Accra, targeting girls who have begun menstruating across Basic, Senior High, Technical, and Vocational institutions.
Of the total, 8,900 pads were allocated to the three second-cycle institutions, while 13,100 went to public basic schools in the municipality.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony on Tuesday, the Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, Mr Benjamin Ayiku Narteh, emphasized the government’s commitment to initiatives that support youth development. He urged students to use the pads responsibly and not sell them, highlighting that the donation was meant to ensure proper menstrual hygiene and support educational continuity.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Israel Adjetey Otchwenmah, through the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mrs Rhodaline Adwoa Konduah, assured that the assembly would continue to support initiatives promoting growth and development in the communities without discrimination.
Mrs Theresa Tetteh, Municipal Director of Education for Ledzokuku, expressed gratitude to the government and assured that the sanitary pads would reach the intended beneficiaries. She noted that the initiative would help girls attend school consistently, regardless of their menstrual cycles, thereby improving punctuality and participation in class.
This distribution aligns with the government’s broader campaign to enhance school enrolment and retention among girls, addressing absenteeism caused by inadequate menstrual hygiene management. The initiative aims to ensure that girls can complete their education without disruption.
