The Breanna Memorial Childhood Cancer Foundation last Friday inaugurated the isolation ward, adopted by the foundation at the Rebecca Akufo-Addo Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for infectious children at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra.
The ward, which was named after the late Childhood Cancer Ambassador, Breanna Fosua Addai aimed to support children on admission financially through payment of some laboratory tests, and service charges, among others.
Through a partnership with various organisations including MDS-Lancet Laboratories Ghana Ltd, FES Consultancy Ltd, Accra City Hotel, Labianca Company Ltd, Medfit, Vital Management, Conship, Greenline Logistics Ltd, and individual supporters, the foundation was able to fully furnish the ward with state-of-the-art equipment to enhance the hospital’s healthcare delivery.
The Executive Director of the foundation, Mr Solomon Addai, said the adoption of the ward was in fulfilment of a promise by her daughter when she was alive.
“When little Breanna was alive, she was mostly admitted to the isolation ward at Rebecca Akufo-Addo PICU for intensive care and wished that her NGO, adopt the ward to be named after her so that children living with cancer benefit from the facility due to the cost involved in treatment,” he added.
Mr Addai said the foundation would also support children who were usually transferred from the Oncology Unit to the ward for intensive care with GH¢100,000 every year through its activities and support from partners and donors.
According to him, payment for services at the Oncology Unit puts a lot of financial burden on the parents of the children, “so our effort is to support and also pay for maintenance cost to ensure the ward remained in good condition.”
Mr Addai said the foundation had a lot of interventions rolled out to support children living with cancer, some of which included the adoption of a floor of $1.2m, a 40-bed paediatric oncology block construction project for children with cancer at KBTH, 20 per cent discount on laboratory test for all children living with cancer at MDS-Lancet Laboratories Ghana Ltd.
The rest are the development of the USSD code (*789*333#) that allowed mobile phone users to subscribe and donate GH¢1 per month towards the treatment of childhood cancer, and the Breanna childhood cancer awareness walk among others.
He commended the partners for their support and called on individuals and corporate organisations to support the foundation to make the dream of Little Breanna come true to help fight childhood cancer in the country.
The Administrator for the Child Health Department, KBTH, Mrs Esther Tetteh expressed gratitude to Breanna Memorial Childhood Cancer Foundation for the continuous support towards children living with cancer.
She said the support would greatly impact the lives of the children at the hospital, saying “providing healthcare in a conducive environment plays a key role in recovery.”
Mrs Tetteh used the opportunity to call on other benevolent organisations to support the children and alleviate some of their plights as their treatment was costive.
