Thirty-seven educational institutions and organisations have received Head of State Awards (HOSA) license certificates to operate as awards centres in Accra.
They include 35 senior high schools and two organisations to run and deliver the awards to young people.
HOSA is a non-formal education and learning framework that challenges and equips young people between the ages of 14-24 for life and work. The license certificates which are renewable every three years are presented to youth organisations and institutions working with young people, equipping them with the needed life and employable skills for life and work.
It is the part of Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, founded by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh of the United Kingdom.
The Board chairman of HOSA, Mr Sintim-Aboagye, who presented the license congratulated the institutions for successfully meeting the requirements of being an Award Center under HOSA scheme in Ghana.
The Executive Director of HOSA, Mr Peter Akai Anum, stated that the award scheme enhances the learning opportunities of young people outside the walls of the classroom by filling the gap left by formal tuition and equips young people for life and work.
He said the award scheme builds the confidence of participants and engages them with their communities to make a difference to themselves and the world at large.
Mr Anum added that the scheme has three Award levels of Bronze, Silver and Gold, and four sectional requirements of community service, skills development, physical recreation and adventurous journey.
That, he said, provided a balanced programme of personal challenge and development, pushing young people to their limits.
He congratulated the schools and institutions that received their licences and called on them to work and support one another towards the development and transformation of Ghana.
Some of the Head Teachers who spoke pledged their commitment to ensure their schools serve as effective awards centres.
