The Forum of Equity, a non-governmental organisation, focusing on electoral reforms has suggested the formation of continental and regional bodies to draw up feasible plans to establish continental and regional electoral colleges.
It noted that there was a lot of electoral disputes on the African continent because of mistrust of various national electoral commissions due to appointment of officials by ruling governments, so opposition parties will not always be sceptical about the outcomes of electoral results.
Prince Bagnaba Mba, the President of Forum for Equity, made the suggestion during discourse on democratic transitions in Africa, attributing a chunk of African conflicts to political crisis and electoral disputes.
“Just as we have FIFA, CAF referees and leaderships handling our continental and regional competitions, it will be expedient to also have an electoral college that will organise peaceful, transparent, free and fair political elections on the African continent.
“If the African Union can set up an African court, then it will equally be profitable for them to start an electoral college from various countries to conduct and supervise presidential and parliamentary elections of member countries.
“Although the establishment of such a college might take a longer period on account of diverse opinions and orientations, it will be better to begin somewhere for future generations to benefit and stem the numerous electoral conflicts on the continent.
“All member states of the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States should consider the suggestion as a major issue for deliberation in succeeding years and meetings to simplify the elections of member countries,” Mr Mba intimated. -GNA
