Parents have been urged to give special care to babies with deformities rather than neglecting them after delivery.
The President of the Noble Touching Lives Foundation (NTLF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Mr George Annan, observed that mothers who gave birth to deformed babies usually abandon them shortly after delivery because they tended to see them as a financial liability.
“Most of them are seen on the streets begging alms from commuters to aid children with deformity,” he said.
Speaking with the GhanaianTimes on Friday, Mr Annan, observed that mothers with such children must recognise that such babies were a ‘special gift’ and must be treated well.
“Mothers must understand that such children are gift from God, some mothers even maltreat such children and others go to the extent of killing them, such children are unique and can change the lives of such parents who devote patience and love for them,” he said.
He cited some of the root causes of child deformities as malnutrition, intake of alcohol, refusal to attend anti-natal care, adding that verbal and emotional abuse were dangerous to the health of unborn babies.
Mr Annan said the foundation would continue to engage with the Ministry of Health and the media to ensure public was educated on the health implications of such causes for children.
