City’s Foden (left) being congratulated after scoring his second goa
PHIL Foden was in sparkling form as he inspired Manchester City to a 4-1 win over Newport County in their FA Cup fifth-round clash at Rodney Parade.
Manchester City left Sergio Aguero at home for the tie, but otherwise fielded and almost full-strength side.
City failed to break through in the first half, and both Leroy Sane and Tyreeq Bakinson hit the woodwork for their respective sides.
Having earned around £1 million from their cup run already, Newport reached half-time in with a shot of the quarter-finals.
In the second half, Sane put the away side ahead with a vicious shot at close range which bobbled into the net after smashing into goalkeeper Joe Day’s face, and victory was made certain when Phil Foden’s solo effort forced another error from Day.
A late goal from Padraig Amond gave City a brief fright, but Foden hit back almost instantly to settle nerves, and Riyad Mahrez made it four.
