The Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) on Monday officially opened the International Olympic Committee (IOC) funded Development of National Sports System (DNSS) programmes at the Korea Sports Complex in Tema, Community 3.
Opening the event on Monday, president of the Federation, Mr Frederick Lartey Otu said the three-month DNSS period will see the organisation of development courses/seminars for major stakeholders of the sport, beginning with the 2nd National Referees Licence Course, Administrators Seminar and the 2nd National Coaching License Course, all at the Korea Sports Complex.
The residential programmes which has started with the five-day Referee License course for 40 will be followed by the Administrators Seminar for 20 participants (two from each region) from March 11-15 and then a 10-day Coaching Course on April 3 -12.
Mr Otu acknowledged the development assistance of the IOC, World Taekwondo Peace Corps and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and stressed on the need for local assistance from the National Sports Authority and Corporate bodies.
He also outlined the importance of the DNSS programme as Taekwondo, he said, was destined to become a household name in Ghana.
“We want to raise the taekwondo officiating standard in order to reduce incidents of bad officiating in competitions. We will also train 20 Administrators and secretaries in sports management, events planning and others to help in the development of the sport; training and licensing 40 coaches from the regions to help these coaches to establish new taekwondo clubs in their localities and train more athletes.”
Papa Asante, who represented the Director General (DG) of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Peter Twumasi, outlined the vision of the NSA to develop all sports.
The Ambassador for the Republic of Korea, Kim Sungsoo, pledged the continuous support of the Embassy in the promotion and development of the sport in Ghana.
Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, who officially opened the DNSS programme, advised the participants to take the event serious.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) won three medals at the just ended maiden Nigeria Taekwondo International Open championships in Abuja.
