Mr Samuel Tettey
All is set for the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election to be held tomorrow, January 31, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission )(EC), in charge of Operations, Mr Samuel Tettey, has assured.
According to him, biometric verification devices, indelible inks and other logistics as well as personnel required for the smooth execution of the elections had all been put in place.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times in an interview regarding the pools on Thursday, Mr Tettey said a total of 548 staff of the EC made up of presiding officers will man the 137 polling stations in the constituency.
A threshold of 850 voters or more are expected at each of the polling stations.
He said a total of 88,745 voters were expected to cast their ballot to elect a new Member of Parliament to replace the late Mr Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, who died in the United States of America on November 21, 2018 after a short illness.
The Deputy EC chair said four political parties, namely, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) and the Liberia Party of Ghana (LPG) have been cleared by the commission to contest the polls.
Mr Tettey said all the parties have been furnished with the voter register electronically saying that it was the same register that was used in the 2016 general elections.
He refuted any suggestion that the register was bloated adding that there had not been addition to the number since the last general elections in 2016 elections.
Mr Tettey said there had not been a case of voter transfer or new registration so far saying that the register was full-proofed because of the robust nature of the system.
The Deputy EC Chair in charge of operations assured all party agents who would be deployed at the polls to represent their parties, to make all inquiries to the presiding officers should they have any issue with the process.
He said the measures were put in place to address any challenges that may arise especially with the BVDs.
The contesting political parties had been criss-crossing the constituency canvassing for votes with the ruling NPP holding its rally yesterday, attended by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to round off its electioneering campaign.
Some of the areas in the constituency are Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, University of Ghana, Legon, East Legon, Dzorwulu, Okponglo, East Legon and Shiashie.
