Eric Donkor
Former Asante Kotoko Deputy Captain, Eric Donkor, has cautioned the club’s fans to be moderate in their expectations in the team’s fortunes in the ongoing CAF Confederations Cup.
Kotoko advanced to the group stage of CAF’s second tier club competition for the first time in 11-years after dispatching Cameroonian opposition, Coton Sport 5-3 on aggregate last Sunday in their playoff encounter.
Donkor, who spent seven years at the ‘Fabulous’ club before joining Ashantigold last year, wants fans to be measured in their expectations .
“The team has grinded good results so far especially impressing in away games which are very critical and also winning at home but I want fans to be cautiously optimistic about how far the team can go in the competition”.
He said the secret weapon for this Kotoko team has been the synergy between the management and playing body and the desire by both parties to achieve good results.
He described the current squad as a balanced one with a combination of experience and burgeoning youth capable of navigating their way through the group.
Group (C), where Kotoko is drawn, comprises Sudanese giants Al Hilal and Zambian duo Zesco United and Nkana FC.
Donkor who worked with Kotoko gaffer, C.K. Akonnor briefly before he was fired by the ‘Miners’ says Akonnor has more in store for the ‘Porcupines’ if they would continue to support and exercise patience with him.
He described Akonnor as a determined coach who always wants to win.
Donkor said Kotoko’s participation spelled a good omen for the return of football in the country owing to the support they have enjoyed from the football fraternity.
The prominent left-back last Sunday won his first trophy with the Miners after they humbled Medeama 4-0 to lift the Betway Cup in Obuasi.
