The Tema Regional Fire Command says haphazard arrangement of items in some households pose a threat to the safety of the occupants and a recipe for disaster.
According to the Tema Regional Fire Safety Inspector, Divisional Officer Grade II (DOG II) David Afful, the Command had observed that in some homes Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, stoves and electrical appliances were all kept in the same room with humans because of limited space.
Interacting with the media on the sidelines of a one-week’s safety capacity building for personnel in the Tema Region, DO II Affull said residents in over 120 homes had been educated on fire and safety measures.
He said a significant number of homes were living in ignorance as far as safety was concerned, and the residents were oblivious of the possible dangers of their actions.
D.O II Afful said such households were advised to re-arrange their appliances and equipment, and relocate some of them to prevent any unfortunate incident.
He said the Command had also visited some industries to give them education on how to ensure the safety of their staff and properties, which some had welcomed and were complying.
Addressing selected personnel from the region to officially open the workshop, the Tema Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Frances Rockson, said the training was part of the mandate of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to save lives and property through the prevention and management of undesired fires.
She said the training was to build the capacity of the personnel to upgrade their knowledge in modern trends in fire safety as the fire industry is fast involving in a technological era.
ACFO Rockson said areas to be covered included legal framework, authority and duties, fire risk assessment, fire detection and alarm systems, and permitting and certification.
She urged them to use the knowledge acquired to transform themselves and their professional capabilities to help prevent disasters.
She also charged them to embark on a massive public educational drive to reduce the incidents of fires and other disasters especially as the harmattan season is near.
