THE National Democratic Congress (NDC) yesterday vetted all seven presidential aspirants for the 2020 general elections at its headquarters in Accra.
The aspirants include Member of Parliament for Nadwoli Kaleo Constituency and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin; Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi; former President John Dramani Mahama and a businessman Alhaji Nurudeen Iddrissu.
The rest were former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority, Sylvester Adinam Mensah; Goosie Tanoh and former Trade and Industry Minister, Dr Ekwow Spio -Garbrah.
Mr Bagbin who was the first to be vetted was accompanied by former Minister of Information in the Mahama-led government, Mr Fritz Baffour and other supporters amidst drumming and singing.
After about an hour of vetting, Mr Bagbin came out beaming with smiles and described the exercise as a friendly one.
According to him, he was pleased with the outcome of the exercise and was confident he would emerge as the winner of the presidential elections.
He said he was quizzed on his capacity, character and care for the people adding that these were the basic elements of leadership.
The next was the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi who was followed by the former Member of Parliament for La Dade Kotopon Constituency, Nii Amasah Namoale and his supporters.
Former President John DramaniMahama was the third to arrive and be vetted.
He arrived in the company of the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Ambassador Ohene Agyekum, former Minister of Communication, Dr Omane Boamah, his spokesperson Joyce Bawah and some Greater Accra NDC constituency chairmen.
He left immediately after his session without any media interaction.
Businessman Nurudeen Iddrisu was followed by Sylvester Mensah, Goosie Tanoh and Mr Garbrah.
Mr Garbrah was confident he would win the election because he is the only aspirant who had continuously contested the flagbearership for 12 years.
“I had also served the party and risen through the ranks to become the vice chairman and also served the nation as a minister and three international companies,” he added.
When elected “I will transform the nation into the fastest and competent growing economies of the world and because of the relations with the people of the world , I have a better understanding of how this world really works,” he stated.
A member of the vetting of committee, James Klutse Avedzi said all the candidates were inspiring and that he had no doubt that whoever emerged as the winner would have the support of the party.
Balloting of positions would be held today at the party headquarters and the report on the vetting would also be read at a press conference which would be held today.
Members of the vetting committee were Nii Okaija Adamafio as Chairman, Haruna Iddrisu, James K, Avedzi, Professor Stephen Kende, Professor Kwaku Danso Boafo, Oscar Amenyedoho and Madam Lucy Amartefio.
