Most Rev John Bonaventure Kwofie
Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, the former Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese has been appointed the new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Accra.
He took over from Most Rev Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle, who has been re-assigned to Cape Coast in the Central Region, as the Metropolitan Archbishop.
The announcement was made by Rev Father Lazarus Anondee, the Secretary General of the Catholic Bishop Conference Ghana at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday.
He said a communiqué released in Accra, by the Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana (ANG) on Tuesday stated his appointment was by His Holiness, Pope Francis.
Most Rev Kwofie was born on April 26, 1958 in Apowa, a town in the Western Region to Mr. John Kogyam Kwofie of blessed memory and Mrs Agnes Tokwah Kwofie.
He had his elementary education at Apowa Catholic School from 1964 to 1972, obtained his secondary education at St. Theresa’s Minor Seminary, Amisano in Elmina from the year 1972-1979 and entered the Spiritan Congregation in the year 1979.
The Bishop had his postulancy in Ebolowa, Cameroun and his novitiate at Bwiam, The Gambia and studied Philosophy at the Spiritan Institute of Philosophy in Isienu, Nigeria from 1981-1983.
He further studied Theology at St Paul’s Seminary, Gbarnga, Liberia, from 1984-1988 and attained a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Biblical Institute in Rome in 1991-1995.
Most Rev. Kwofie had his first religious profession in the Spiritan Congregation (CSSp) on August 15, 1981 at Banjul and Final Religious Profession on August 2, 1987 at Kumasi.
On July 23 1988 he was ordained to priesthood at the Holy Spirit Church in Bantama, Kumasi and assigned as an associate pastor at the St. Joseph’s Parish in the Diocese of Banjul from 1988-1989 and the Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart Parish also in Banjul.
As a devoted religious person, he became the President of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious Men in Ghana from 1998-2004 and Coordinator of the Continental Conference of Major Superiors of CSSp West African Foundation(later West African Province) with the provincial House in Ghana.
He was the first Assistant General of the Holy Spirit Congregation, 2004-2012. Reverend Father Kwofie is also a Retreat Master and lecturer in Sacred Scripture.
Rev Kwofie was a lecturer in Sacred Scripture at Duquesne Universities, Pittsburgh, USA.
He was appointed Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese on July 3, 2014 until his appointment as the Metropolitan Archbishop-elect of Accra.
