The suspect
A HOUSEMISTRESS at the Shia Senior High Technical School, in the Ho municipality, Mavis Gakpetor is alleged to have assaulted a student on campus, and left her blind in one eye.
The alleged victim, Sadiatu Armiyao, 17, who is now receiving treatment at the Volta Regional Hospital, told the Ghanaian Times at Ho yesterday that, “For now, all I can see with my right eye is black and nothing else”.
Narrating her ordeal, the second-year Visual Arts student, said that the incident took place after prep hours on Sunday.
According to Armiyao, two students were fighting and she recognised one of them as her friend, so she intervened to stop the fight.
“When the housemistress turned up at the scene, she ordered all of us to go into the dormitory and we obliged,” the injured Armiyao said.
She said that on reaching the dormitory, however, the housemistress pursued her with rage and used the rod she detached from a mop to hit her eye brutally.
“The impact was so great that I hit my head against the metal bed,” Armiyao recalled.
The student said that the housemistress took her to a local health post for first aid and warned her not to disclose what happened to her to anyone, adding that, “But later, I secretly called my mother on phone and she travelled from Ho to come and see me and the housemistress.”
The housemistress told the girl’s mother that she was prepared to fund all the medical expenses she would incur from her daughter’s treatment.
When the Ghanaian Times reporter contacted the housemistress on phone, the housemistress referred him to the headmaster as the right authority to comment on the issue.
Subsequently, this reporter called the headmaster, Mr. J. Akpebu on his cellular phone, but he refused to talk about the issue, insisting that that this reporter should first travel to the school for his comments.
Meanwhile, Madam Enyonam Afi Amafuga, Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service, said, “We have sent our officials to the school to commence investigations into the case without delay.”
At the time of filing this report, the Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Wonder Dogbevie, told the Ghanaian Times that, “We are acting swiftly over this matter and we have also written to the school authorities to release the teacher immediately to come to Ho and assist in the investigations.”
