Two persons were yesterday granted a total of GH¢100,000.00 bail by the Accra Circuit Court “One” for committing various offences at different places in the Greater Accra Region.
Mr. Afotey Laryea, a 54-year-old painter, resident of Teshie, a suburb of Accra, is standing trial for allegedly supplying narcotic drug and was granted GH¢20,000.00 bail with two sureties.
Another accused, Mr. Collins Afoakwa, also known as Kwabena Minta or Azonto, a taxi driver, was also granted GH¢80,000.00 bail with three sureties for robbing Madam Comfort Quaye, a food vendor, of her purse containing GH¢350.00 and a small flashlight, at about 3:45 am at the Lord’s Hotel, North Kaneshie, on September 19, 2017.
The judge, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, ordered accused to be reporting to the Kaneshie police every Wednesday until the court decided otherwise, and adjourned the case to January 16, 2019, for continuation.
Both Afotey Laryea and Collins Afoakwa pleaded not guilty to their respective charges of supply of narcotic drug and robbery, preferred against them by the police.
Prosecution said that Laryea took to his heels when he saw the police closing in on him at the Teshie Aduemi Public toilet area, where he plied his illegal trade, but was arrested.
A search conducted on him revealed eight wraps of whitish substance believed to be narcotic. He would appear in court again on January 22, 2019.
In the case of Afoakwa, he pulled a cutlass from his taxi, which the victim, Madam Comfort Quaye, boarded and ordered her to surrender whatever was in her possession to him, which she complied.
The accused sped off, but the husband of the victim, who accompanied her to board the taxi, had taken down the registration number of the car, which was –GR 6273-14, a white and yellow Matiz.
Afoakwa was arrested by the police at Dansoman Last Stop, where he was seen driving the taxi Madam Quaye boarded on the day of the incident.
