The Greater Accra Region is to foster deeper relationship with the Shandon Province of the Republic of China to boost the regional economy and advance development in the coming year.
According to the Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashittey, the collaboration will be in areas of information, communication and technology (ICT), Finance, education, telecommunication, tourism and arts, agriculture and waste management.
He made the announcement on Monday when the Deputy Governor of Shandon, Madam Ren Airong, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra as part of a two-day visit to the country.
It was premised on an earlier visit by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the Province earlier this year to solicit investor support to the Region and country on the whole.
The Minister pointed out the numerous socio-economic opportunities that existed in the country noting that “though we are not in a position yet to give you anything tangible we assure you that when your investors come here, they will also benefit.”
He hoped that positive fruits borne over the years as a result of the long standing ties between Ghana and China would perk up as both cities chart a new path.
“The people of Shandon are well involved in the Fishing sector especially in areas around Tema and its environs as well as other sectors across the country and we hope that our inter-city collaboration will see more investors from your Province,” he stated.
Madam Airong who was accompanied by a high powered delegation including the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Shi Ting Wang observed the prospects in the Ghanaian economy “particularly in Greater Accra where lots of Shandon companies have established businesses.”
She said the Province of Shandon at present contributed about $ 1.2 trillion of China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and hoped to increase the figures through investment opportunities in the region.
“China and Africa are joining hands to build a common future and energise our friendship for our mutual benefit and having deepened our understanding of the prospects and challenges of Accra, we hope to encourage more investors here for feasibility studies,” she emphasised.
