The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has received a cheque of GH¢36,834.59 from Frimps Oil Company Limited to revamp its Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) which was not functional for the past one year.
The donation was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
The Finance Manager of the company, Mr. Stephen Appiah said the presentation in Accra yesterday said the donation was an appeal by the CID to the company to support them revamp the FSL.
He stressed the need to support the police in the country in combating crimes in the country.
Mr Appiah commended the Police Service for ensuring peace and stability in the country and assured them of their continuous support to help them achieve their goals.
The Director-General of the CID, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah who received the cheque said the DNA section of the FSL which had not been in operation for the past one year and was hampering investigations.
She said her outfit which is mandated to conduct investigations into criminal activities sometimes had to rely on private hospitals and other agencies for DNA testing.
‘’The section undertakes identification and analysis of biological samples from human sources, the section is however saddled with the myriad of challenges hindering its smooth running, the most significant of these challenges is the lack of reagents and serving equipment available at the section,’’ he added.
The Director-General said in view of the increase in the spate of sophiscated criminal activities, it has become imperative to use forensic techniques and emerging scientific technologies in criminal investigations.
She stressed the need to revamp the various sections of FSL to play a leading role in the fight against crimes.
DCOP Addo-Danquah commended the management of the company for the kind gesture and assured it would be used for its intended purpose.
The Director-General called on other organisations to emulate the company’s kind gesture.
