Dr Archibald Letsa, Volta Regional Minister
The One Volta Group (OVG), a civil society advocacy group from the Volta Region has called for responsible reconciliatory gestures before and after the December 27 referendum.
That the group explained, was the only way to maintain the peace of the region after the process.
The Director of OVG, Tobge Hortormaho Amedzake III, who made this known at a press conference in Accra, indicated that all parties must uphold, advocate, and deepen democracy, rule of law transparency and accountable governance in order to ensure the process was credible and acceptable by all parties.
The group, he explained drew the attention of the citizenry to demand responsible attitude and reconciliatory gestures to ensure the process was credible, transparent, free and fair, devoid of fear, intimidation and threat of life and property.
“This is how we can enjoy our peace after the polls truly reflect the wish of the people since the process either for or against is a clear test of whether the demand of the petitioners is realistic or not and demand the process must reflect the thinking and desires of the masses.
“The region has enjoyed peace and tranquillity over the years but is being threatened by desire for a new region as there are alleged assault and intimidation against anyone seen to be campaigning for a Yes or No vote or holding any contrary view on the proposed Oti region.
“We urged the government, the Electoral Commission, the National Commission on Civic Education, the Minister for the Interior, the Inspector General of Police and the National Peace Council to take keen interest in the referendum in order to ensure national stability after the process due to its collective responsibility in ensuring electoral integrity and credible, transparent, free and fair referendum.
“We also appealed to the international community, development partners, the Coalition of Domestic Observers and civil society, organisations to monitor the process in the upcoming referendum as fallouts from domestic elections have serious implications for national stability,” Togbe Amedzake stressed.
He expressed optimism that the people of the proposed region would remain tolerant, peaceful and unified to achieve the desired development of the area.
