The schools need computers to promote the learning of ICT
Most pupils in public schools in New Juaben South and Akuapem North municipalities have no access to computers.
Though government had provided computers to many of the schools in the two municipalities, most of the laptop computers presented to the schools have broken down.
This was revealed in a survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in the two municipalities.
Nana Asare M/A Basic School, Okorase Methodist ‘A’ and ‘B’ Junior High Schools (JHS), Old Asuoya M/A JHS, and Koforidua Freeman Methodist JHS do not have both computer laboratories and computers for ICT practical studies on their time tables.
However Sarkodie M/A Basic ‘C’ in New Juaben South has 22 laptops received from the state and Koforidua Presbyterian School Complex has six computers provided by the Parents/Teachers Association of the school.
Sarkodie M/A Basic ‘A’ in Koforidua has just one computer, which was donated by Zain now Airtel Ghana when the school made an appeal to the company for support in 2013.
Madam Fati Gariba, a primary one to six ICT teacher at the Sarkodie M/A Basic School, said the school received two laptops from the government some few years ago, but they were no longer functioning adding that one of the laptops, had a broken screen.
Ms Gariba explained that the laptop with the broken screen could not be used for teaching because it was difficult to see through the broken screen.
She said on the average, there were 20 students in an ICT class and sometimes during practical sections, the class had to be divided into two in order for everyone to participate actively in the ICT laboratory.
Ms Gariba recalled that in November 2014, RLG organised a workshop for ICT teachers and were supposed to distribute laptops to the teachers to enhance their teaching, however most ICT teachers who participated in the workshop did not receive the laptops.
The headmistress of Sarkodie M/A Basic ‘A’ in Koforidua , Ms Susana Agyemang Torto, appealed to the government and non-governmental organisations to support the school with sufficient computers to enhance teaching and learning because students show great interest in ICT.
