The Prampram Police Monday arrested two people in connection with the vandalising of a 200 KVA transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana.
It is valued at GH¢24,850.00 and located opposite the Prampram Senior High School in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region.
Oman Abdulai, a scrap dealer, aged 37 and Agyeiwaa Kordieh, 40, were apprehended by some personnel of Sunset Spot, a popular drinking bar in Prampram and handed over to the police, when they attempted conveying the transformer bucket and steel laminates in a taxi to Ashaiman.
The Prampram District Police Commander, Superintendent Issah Mohammed Cantona, confirming the story to the Ghanaian Times said the case was under investigation and that suspects would be put before court soon.
The Ghanaian Times gathered that the perpetrators of such crimes sell the transformer and its vital parts to scrap dealers.
Throwing more light on the matter, the Prampram District Manager of ECG, Felix Ohene Darkwah, said last year alone, five transformers were vandalised in the district creating unexpected power outages in these affected areas, which were rectified by hooking affected areas to other transformers.
“We therefore alerted the security agencies who have been on the lookout to apprehend the perpetrators,” he said.
He said on October 8 this year, thieves once again vandalised a 200 KVA transformer located opposite the Prampram SHS. The thieves also took away all copper windings in the transformer.
He condemned the negative act which he said created losses to the company and a lot of inconvenience to consumers.
Mr. Darkwah therefore urged residents to inform the police or the ECG whenever they spot suspicious persons near their installations.
