Government on Thursday laid a Legislative Instrument (LI) in Parliament seeking Parliamentary approval to create five new districts and municipal assemblies.
Mr Augustine Collins Ntim, a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, who laid the Legislative Instrument on behalf of the substantive Minister said it was to deepen governance at the local level.
The proposed districts and municipal assemblies are Korle-Klottey Municipal Assembly and Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly carved out from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in the Greater Accra Region, and the North-East-Gonja District carved from the East Gonja Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region.
The rest are Achiase District Assembly created from the Birim South District in the Eastern Region, and the Anloga District carved from the Keta Municipal Assembly in the Volta Region.
With these additions, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies would increase from the current 254 to 259.
According to Mr Ntim, in a brief with journalists, the creation of the new district assemblies was to deepen decentralisation and also bring governance closer to the people.
To him, this would enhance resource allocation and distribution of the national cake in order to expedite the job creation agenda of the country.
He recalled that following the creation of 38 new assemblies earlier this year, the ministry received several petitions for the creation of more district and municipal assemblies in the existing 275 constituencies.
The Ministry, Mr Ntim said referred the petitions to the executive after which approval was given for the creation of the five new assemblies.
“It became necessary from the agitations of the public that there was the need to have a second look at some of the constituencies,” he stated.
