A three-day project that seeks to use technology to address sanitation challenges in Ghana has ended today in Accra.
Dubbed “Sanitation Hackathon,” the sanitation programme provides an opportunity to innovative people, students, programmers and graduates to leverage information technology (IT) to improve sanitation.
The event, which was under the aegis of Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources in collaboration with the World Bank, brought together 35 teams made up of four persons in each group, who were tasked to develop an innovative IT solution to help keep the country clean.
Out of the 35 selected teams, the one with the best idea would take home $5,000 while the second and third runners-up take $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.
Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Dapaah, in a speech read on her behalf by Mr Anthony Mensah, Director of Environment Health and Sanitation at the ministry, said improved sanitation required comprehensive solution that would provide unique collection, transportation, disposal and treatment of waste.
The minister advised the participants to offer best solutions to help achieve President Akufo-Addo’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.
Mr Henry G.R. Kerali, Country Director of World Bank said the team was expected to provide digital solutions to help curb open defecation in Ghana.
He noted that World Bank had supported many sanitation activities in the country including the ongoing Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Waste Project (SWP), which financed the construction of 12,000 household toilets in 2018.
The World Bank Country Director said much needs to be done if Ghana was to achieve the “clean and green Ghana agenda.”
He said that the World Bank was working with the government of Ghana to initiate the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project, to address drainage, flooding and solid waste management in selected low-income communities.
He appealed to stakeholders to support new ideas to solve environmental and climate change related challenges.
