Emeritus Professor Kwame Ninsin of the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, has underscored every citizen deserve to enjoy equal privileges, respect and rights in order to sustain democratic development.
“Equals rights, privileges and respect for every citizen irrespective of social status will recalibrate human development to improve the lives of the citizenry,” he noted.
Prof Ninsin made the call at the inauguration of the maiden Ghana Political Science Association by the Department of Political Science of the University of Ghana to enhance the political landscape and promote socio-economic cohesion through research.
It was on the theme: ‘Political science research and the quest for Ghana’s democratic development’. Prof Ninsin said the poor had little or no value for democratic rights comprising political scientists in public universities across the country, individuals from cognate departments, alumni, and students, aimed at providing a common platform for professional networking across the world.
According to Prof Ninsin, “we should maintain high degree autonomy to promote justice, liberty, equality, and the dignity of the citizenry since low research output by African researchers makes it difficult to meet the world standards but it needs to change.
“The failure of Africa governments is the failure of researchers in assisting in formulation of policies to contribute to socio-economic development, there is the need for researchers to conduct researches on pertinent issues of national interest.”
Mr Prosper Bani, a former Chief of Staff at the Presidency, noted that election disputes could degenerate the progress, stability and peace of a country and result into crisis saying, “Ghana is not there but we should be mindful there are no strong institutions that can control threats accumulated from electoral disputes.
“I urge political science students to conduct research on real plight of Ghanaians in various sectors of the economy, present facts and evidence to policy makers to enhance decisions towards development of the country.
Prof Atsu Aryee, of the Department of Political Science, observed that in the quest for development, foreign aid agencies dictated to Africa and influenced policies and developmental content.
Dr Maame Gyekye-Gyandoh, the Dean of the Department, said the association would also work towards promoting the maximisation of human and financial resources and successfully engage the West through research and publication concerning the nation and continent at large. -GNA
