… but Liverpool crash in shock defeat to Red Star Belgrade
A double from Harry Kane ensured Tottenham’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League remain alive after they beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 at Wembley in Group B.
The game was only 61 seconds old when Tottenham’s defensive fragilities were highlighted once more. For reasons unknown, Dele Alli was left to mark the towering Luuk de Jong only to lose him and the former Newcastle United forward capitalised with a bullet-header.
Mauricio Pochettino needed a response from his team and he got it as Spurs bombarded the visitors’ goal, but found goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet in inspired form, and the hosts somehow trailed at the break.
Tottenham continued to dominate proceedings after the restart but had to wait until the 78th minute to level matters when Kane combined with Fernando Llorente before firing past Zoet from the edge of the box.
And Kane forced the winner in the last minute of the game via a double deflection to ensure that Tottenham go into matchday five still in the competition.
Inter Milan’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona means the Catalans currently sit top of the group on 10 points, Inter are second on seven and Spurs third on four.
Tottenham still have to play Inter at Wembley next on November 28. Win that and Tottenham will travel to Camp Nou full of confidence that they can replicate their performances against Real Madrid last season – but only if the simple defensive mistakes are eradicated from their game. It’s a tall order but they will need to win both of their remaining matches to have any chance of progressing. – Eurosport
However, Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage were dealt a blow as Red Star Belgrade claimed a shock 2-0 win at the Rajko Mitic Stadium.
The Merseysiders were hoping to bolster their position at the summit of Group C but produced a largely insipid and disjointed display in front of a partisan Serbian crowd.
The home side made a fast start and deservedly picked up their first win in the pool courtesy of Milan Pavkov’s first-half double.
The result sees Liverpool remain on six points from four matches. – Eurosport
