Edmund Quaynor, the Eastern Regional Coordinator of the Right to Information (RTI) Coalition, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to demonstrate their desire to contribute towards minimising corruption, the reduction of poverty and respect for the electorate by passing the RTI bill into law.
He explained that the skewing of all the arguments on RTI to political benefits of the law had blinded the citizenry on the contribution of the RTI law to the economic emancipation of the ordinary people and contribution of the law to poverty alleviation and minimising corruption.
Mr Quaynor was speaking at a public forum on the RTI Bill at Asamankese which was organised by the Eastern Regional branch of the RTI Coalition under the auspices of the African Office of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) and the Open Society Foundation, an international funding institution.
He observed that “the RTI law, when passed will allow the citizenry to be asking questions on policies, issues, access to quality information, first step to the creation of successful businesses because with information, it is easy for entrepreneurs to take the right decision to succeed”.
“This is what access to information can do for the individual and the country as a whole,” Mr Quaynor stressed.
Esther Ahulu of the CHRI noted that the nation needed an RTI law that is workable and beneficial to the people and called for the removal of clauses of the bill that gave blanket exemption to the information from the Presidency and from the public service. -GNA
