Gomoaba Nana Apata Kofi V, Chief of Gomoa Pomadze, in the Central Region, has urged beneficiaries of the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) Scholarship Scheme to voluntarily provide financial and material support for the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.
He asked them to ‘payback’ what they had benefited from the scholarship scheme as a way of complementing government’s efforts at achieving the goals of the free SHS instituted by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Nana Apata Kofi also appealed to well-to-do in society to assist the government in funding the education system, and expressed worry that some beneficiaries of the CMB scholarship were opposing the free SHS.
Gomoaba Nana Apata Kofi, who is also the Guantoahene of Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, made the call when Nana Kojo Iddan IX, the new Odikro of Gomoa Jukwa, near Ekwamkrom and his elders visited him at Gomoa Pomadze in the Central Region.
The visit was for the stool elders to officially introduce Nana Iddan to the Pomadzehene to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two-sister Gomoa towns.
Nana Iddan, known in private life as Mr David Aggrey, currently teaches at the Gomoa Asebu/Pomadze District Assembly Junior High School in the region.
Nana Apata Kofi said: “I feel sad that brilliant children of thousands of cocoa farmers who tirelessly made meaningful contributions to sustain this excellent scheme were woefully denied support from the scholarship scheme because it was allegedly hijacked by people with powerful political influence at that time.”
He, therefore appealed to all wealthy Ghanaians who have benefited from the free education system, initiated by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s administration with funds from the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board’s Scholarship Scheme to strive as much as they can to reciprocate this laudable gesture”.
Nana Apata Kofi stressed that this was the best time for beneficiaries of the CMB scholarship to show their nationalism, patriotism and love for the country by contributing to education.
He reiterated the call on Ghanaians to contribute to the success of the Free SHS to enhance national development.
Gomoaba Nana Apata Kofi advised parents and guardians to support the free SHS, and encourage their children to go to school to become useful citizens in future. – GNA
