The ‘Charlie Company’ emerged winners of the Inter-Company novices boxing competition for the Basic Infantry Training Course (BITC) 1-2018 held last Friday at the Army Recruits Training School (ARTS) at Shai Hills in Accra.
A total of 399 army recruits participated in the week-long boxing competition as part of the training regimen to equip the young soldiers with physical combat and defense skills.
They were divided into three companies consisting Alpha, Bravo and Charlie groups to engage in an intense three-rounder bouts at the various weight levels.
At the end of the competition, Charlie amassed a total of 116 points followed by Bravo who gained 84 points whilst Alpha scored 80 points to come in third position.
Laryea Thomas from the Charlie Company was adjudged the best male boxer while Otutey Priscilla from Bravo was declared best female boxer.
Boateng Gideon emerged the gallant loser of the competition.
Winners were presented with trophies, certificates and medal.
Guest of Honour, Col. A.Y. Asiamah in his address said the training of the recruits have been designed to churn out highly motivated, physically and mentally robust soldiers capable of meeting the demands of the military profession.
He said the boxing competition was aimed at equipping the young soldiers with the use of fistic for self-defense.
“Boxing is one of the training in this school. In battle when you fire at the enemy they will fire back at you and the side that can sustain fire wins?”
He said “The boxing competition can be likened to battle. Those of you who went into the ring and were idle saw how punches landed on your faces. In the same vein if you go and are idle in the face of the enemy, the enemy will riddle your body with bullets.”
Col. Asiamah cautioned the recruits to take their physical training serious as it forms a core part of their requirement to pass out as soldiers, adding that, the demands of the army required the soldier to be physically fit.
“The demands of the military work will test your physical fitness to the extent that if you are not physically fit, you will not enjoy the work fully “.
Special Guest, Samuel Anim Addo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BabyJet Promotions donated boxing equipment ranging from headgear, mouth guard and gloves to aid boxing activities of the ARTS.
