Ghana is hoping to receive the nod to host the World Series Boxing (WSB), the semi professional boxing tournament sanctioned by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
When approved, it will further boost Ghana’s image as far as boxing was concerned, President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), George Lamptey has said.
Speaking in an interview with the Times Sports, the GBF boss said, the chance to host the championship follows the rebirth of the boxing league dubbed the “Fist of Fury.”
“One of the criteria to host the WSB is to have an ongoing boxing league or constant boxing event in your country and once the league is ongoing, it will not be difficult to receive the right to host the WSB in Ghana,”he said.
With that advantage, he said, Ghana would apply to the world boxing body, AIBA to have the right to host the event which would also give young boxers the platform to exhibit their talent and also get their career on the right path.
The WSB is a six-round amateur boxing tournament aimed at engaging boxers and giving them the platform to fight for honours.
“We are glad that the league is ongoing and hope that it would be successful in order to get the chance to host the series in the country”, he added.
The second of the 26-week boxing league was held on Friday at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
It was a successful night of boxing as several bouts from the juvenile to the professionals came off.
