The Sunyani Municipal Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region is set to roll out a comprehensive revenue mobilisation strategy aimed at boosting its internally generated funds (IGF).
The MCE for Sunyani, Dr Evelyn Kumi-Richardson, said this when she addressed a town hall meeting here on Tuesday.
She said the Assembly had identified issues such as abuse of funds by revenue collectors, and under-valuation of properties, hence the urgent need to fix those irregularities.
The meeting was jointly organised by the Ministry of Information and the Sunyani Municipal Assembly.
She observed that the abuses, among others, had accounted for the Assembly’s inability to meet revenue targets.
In 2017 for instance, the Assembly budgeted for GH¢2,254,205.46 IGF, but it collected only GH¢1,811,376.30, representing 80.35 per cent, she said.
The Assembly, Dr Kumi-Richardson said, would procure electronic devices for revenue collection and establish a revenue taskforce for strict monitoring, and revalue properties in the municipality.
Additionally, she said the Assembly would outsource a portion of its revenue collection responsibility to private companies for effective work and intensify public education as well.
Touching on the Planting for Food and Jobs policy, the MCE said the Assembly in the 2017 farming season sold out inputs worth GH¢109, 999 to 2,923 farmers on credit, but it managed to recover only GH¢68,081.60.
In order not to add up to the huge outstanding debt, she said the Assembly only supplied farmers who paid in cash for the subsidised inputs, and it had so far raised GH¢229, 507.50 in 2018.
Meanwhile, key among the concerns raised during an open forum, included poor road network in the municipality, especially in the hinterlands and lack of ready market for food crops.
